Our friendly mental health team at a hospital in Yorkshire, to support a Service User to a new placement.

"I have worked for SSGL since 2019 at the start of Covid, initially working as an Ambulance Care Assistant (ACA), and progressing to Secure ACA about a year later. I've now worked on the mental health side for well over a year, and I can't believe how much I actually enjoy my job. I wish I got into it sooner, but glad I waited because this company is still small enough that we all actually make a big difference.

When I started, we had an intense week of training, with 12 weeks of being mentored on the road. The training was so interesting and gave me everything I needed to know exactly what I was doing in all the situations I've faced so far.

The best thing about the job has to be the variety in that no 2 days are ever the same. I can't stand Monday to Friday 9 to 5, so this just fitting me to a tee. It's spontaneous in a good way, and I genuinely look forward to starting my 4 on. The work/life balance is also great because I get 4 days off which is equal to my time on, and we get to be on standby at home until a call comes in too. Don't get me wrong, some weeks the 4 on is intense and I might hardly be home, but then it always balances out well and I know I have a solid 4 days off.

The company are very friendly and looks after us really well. Like I said at the start, it's small enough that you can actually see the difference you're making to the company, and to the NHS trusts that we work with. Coming from massive companies where you're practically a number, it's nice to have daily contact with the manager on call when you're at work. I was part of the CQC inspection we had recently, and it bought a tear to my eye to see all the hard work we put in made a difference and led to an amazing report. We have 2 bosses here at the company, and I've become friends with all my crew mates too.

The pay is very decent and we're always paid on time. It's also the small things, like having a selection of fuel cards for our ambulances, which make the difference and show they care. I've always had everything I need for the job, including several uniform trousers as I've lost weight over the past 2 years! We have all the right things to do the job, even down to digital radios and body cameras.

I would highly recommend SSGL to anyone wanting a really rewarding job that makes a difference, and where you're recognised for that difference too. I always have a good private chat with anyone who joins the company to give them the in's and out's of it all, so if you do come to us, you'll be well looked after."
